Planned Parenthood's #PinkOut

Hollywood Stands With Planned Parenthood's #PinkOut

As you scroll through social media today, you may notice that posts featuring the already ubiquitous "millennial pink" seem to have multiplied. And that's no coincidence.

The barrage of pink is part of Planned Parenthood's #PinkOut movement, which aims to "turn the internet pink" in order to prove to lawmakers just how many citizens stand in support of the organization, which is in danger of being defunded.

"It’s a day to show anti-women’s health politicians that we will fight like hell to protect our 2.5 million patients a year and the 1 in 5 women that will go to Planned Parenthood in her life," reads a statement on the organization's website. "It’s a day for people to unite and say: We resist. We are strong. And we’re not backing down ― not today, not ever."

Like the Pussy Hats, which turned the crowds at the Women's Marches the world over into a sea of bubble gum pink, the #PinkOut movement wants to provide a visual representation of Planned Parenthood's vast number of supporters. So far, both Hollywood and the fashion industry have shown their support, with influencers like Emily Ratajkowski, Gabourey Sidibe and Elisabeth Moss using the hashtag.

Supporters are encouraged to turn their profile photos pink and to post photos of themselves wearing the hot hue along with the #PinkOut hashtag and the #IStandWithPP hashtag. And, because this is the Internet, Mean Girls GIFs with the infamous one-liner, "On Wednesdays we wear pink" are highly encouraged, too.

LOVE Magazine

Kendall Jenner channels Marilyn Monroe for LOVE Magazine

Kendall Jenner has collaborated with esteemed LOVE Magazine editor Katie Grand once again, this time starring in a short film for the British fashion title.

Inspired by Marilyn Monroe, Jenner is shot by renowned photographer Rankin and sings a medley of Monroe's hits in the clip, which was unveiled today on LOVE’s website.

Jenner channels some of Monroe’s signature looks in the film, modelling a 1950s-esque swimsuit by Miu Miu with a Humphrey Butler diamond tiara in one shot, and a YSL dress sourced from London emporium William Vintage, with Jimmy Choo shoes in another. She also wears lingerie by La Perla and Chanel pearl necklaces, in a modern spin on the icon’s style.

Hair stylist Samantha Hillberby recreated Marilyn’s famous curls (although stopped short of dying Jenner’s hair blonde) while make-up artist Lisa Eldridge gave her that classic red pout.

Grand and Jenner’s partnerships have been frequent and fruitful since they first met in 2013. When star stylist Grand gave the reality TV star her first big break (casting her in the Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2014 New York Fashion Week show) she offered Kendall an opportunity to be seen as a fashion industry star. Jenner has since gone on to work with brands from Chanel to Estee Lauder, building a modelling career worth millions.

Kendall clearly hasn’t forgotten the favour, as she’s starred on two covers of Grand’s LOVE Magazine, and even turned her hand to photography, shooting and styling her friend Kaia Gerber (who is also Cindy Crawford’s daughter) for the magazine last year, as well as compiling a 72-page portfolio for the magazine’s 17th edition earlier this year. On the latter assignment, the duo encouraged fans to apply via social media to be featured, and of the 110,000 applicants, they selected 25 to be photographed by Kendall in Los Angeles last November.

"Kendall had come to London for the LOVE 17 launch as she'd photographed the cover stars, and Rankin hadn't shot with her before, and had really wanted to make this video with her,” LOVE editor Katie Grand explained of how the film came to be. “She had the time so we just did it. It was a super fun day as ever with Kendall."

Back Against Childhood Bullies

Kate Winslet, Once Called "Blubber," Reveals How She Fought Back Against Childhood Bullies

During an inspirational speech to children in London, Kate Winslet spoke about being fat-shamed and bullied when she was growing up. "They called me Blubber," the actress shared at a youth empowerment event for the WE Day organization on Wednesday.

"[They] teased me for wanting to act," added Winslet, according to The Telegraph. "Locked me in the cupboard. Laughed at me."

She said it continued when she started to pursue acting. "I was even told that I might be lucky in my acting if I was happy to settle for the fat-girl parts," revealed the actress, adding that casting agents would tell her she wasn't what they were looking for.

The Titanic star said that she "fought back" by refusing to give up on her dream: "I had to ignore the negative comments. I had to believe in myself. I had to choose to rise above it all, and I had to work hard. You have to be indestructible to do what you love, and believe that you are worth it. And sometimes that’s the hardest part."

"One day, I was cast as Rose in Titanic," continued Winslet, who has been nominated for an Academy Award seven times. "The most unlikely candidate ― Kate from the sandwich shop in Reading ― suddenly acting in one of the biggest movies ever made!"

Winslet has been open about being bullied about her weight in the past. When she won a BAFTA for her role in the Steve Jobs biopic, she told reporters backstage, "When I was only 14, I was told by a drama teacher that I might do OK, if I was happy to settle for the fat-girl parts," she said, adding in a stage whisper, "Look at me now. Look at me now."

She also told Rolling Stone that Titanic director James Cameron used to call her "Kate Weighs-a-Lot."

"It is possible to overcome your fears," said Winslet on Wednesday. "I learned to embrace my flaws, to make no apology for who I am. I dug deep, and I decided that I simply wouldn’t listen when they said my body didn't fit."

Improve Their Wardrobes

This Fashion Illustrator Challenges Women to Improve Their Wardrobes

If the name Dallas Shaw sounds familiar, that’s probably because she’s of the most highly coveted fashion illustrators in the industry. Though she used to whip up illustrations for Disney, she is now an artist, project designer, style ambassador and visual consultant for companies like Kate Spade, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta. And last year, Shaw decided to combine all of those experiences into a heavily illustrated book. She culled inspiration from those years she spent backstage at runway shows, the countless mood boards she edited and the many sketchpads she doodled in to compile The Way She Wears It, which hits the shelves on March 28, 2017.

The book combines Shaw’s custom illustrations with handwritten notes, letters and questions to the reader on every page. It incorporates images and fabrics and takes a deep dive into Shaw’s personal style tastes, but instead of telling you what to exactly buy or where to buy it (don’t worry, there is some advice for that, too), she uses the book as a challenge to help re-invent your personal style.

“The concept is to give you fashion prompts,” Shaw told the Observer. “Everything is definitely a little bit of a push, but the idea is that everybody is supposed to be figuring out [fashion] for themselves.”

For example, consider the mixing prints challenge, which Shaw likes most because it “pushes people out of their comfort zone.” The challenge, which encourages readers to layer different prints that wouldn’t normally go together, can be one of the scariest fashion tricks to master. Luckily, Shaw breaks it down into easy and understandable steps. Each challenge starts with an “Ease In” section, so for pattern play, it’s wearing a solid outfit with one pattern and matching it with a second patterned accessory. Then it moves to the “Step It Up” section of the challenge, which includes the bold mixing of two prints. Finally, there’s the “Feeling Brave” section, where Shaw encourages you to mix three different prints.

Other challenges include wearing red―starting with maybe a red lipstick, red nail polish, then red coats, red velvet pants, and eventually sporting the fiery hue from head-to-toe. Shaw said her goal was to make the book accessible to everyone, from people who don’t consider themselves to be super fashionable, to the ones who are in the know on every designer’s latest collection. She hopes by having different steps, people can jump around based on their comfort level.

But the real beauty she sees in these challenges? They can all be done from what’s already hanging in your closet.

“I really wanted to make it more about renewed interest in your clothes,” Shaw said. “For the people that are new to it, it’s kind of just giving them a little extra push.”

For Shaw, everything about this book was personal, from the illustrations to the challenges to the text. Each page’s layout is similar to a mood board, with illustrations, fabrics and texts displayed on the page in a cohesive, but non-linear fashion. The layout and the challenges were the aspects of the book where Shaw’s personality shone through most.

In one section, she describes how to spice up your spring wardrobe, going over her own spring color palette first: an array of Easter egg colors mixed with neutrals and bright pops including corals, mints and a dash of poppy. Then she poses questions about the colors you’ve never tried for the season and which ones you want to add to your wardrobe, adding a handwritten note on the side: “Did you just say black? I can’t with you.”

“I’m really taking the things that are personal to me and breaking those down for people,” Shaw said. “I hope that overall, not just the illustrations, but the whole thing feels like you’re reading a fashion journal from me.”

Although she has sometimes been called the Olivia Pope of the fashion industry, she would not consider herself a minimalist, so don’t expect any sections prompting you to try out white hats or minimal accessorizing.

“I definitely came out of the book with an even stronger idea of my own style,” Shaw said. “In overanalyzing, I was still able to learn and take away new things.”

So what’s next on Shaw’s agenda? After she wraps up her book tour, she’s flirting with the idea of illustrating for product design. But before she can open up that chapter, she hopes to soak in this one, revamping people’s interest in clothes and inspiring confidence in people on each page.

Cold Lake designer duo draws fashion attention

A designer duo from a central Alberta community have married their clothing and jewelry passions and they're getting the fashion world's attention.

"Nadine first approached me about a year ago and asked if I would collaborate with her on a project, so we decided we would both do fashion week to try it out. I went back to her in the fall and said, let's do this," Cassandra Newton told Daybreak Alberta.

Newton is a clothing designer in Cold Lake. She recently partnered with jewelry designer Nadine Deslauriers-Friesen and the results are getting a lot of attention. Deslauriers-Friesen's works of art are attached directly to Newton's clothing designs.

Last 2 years 'most amazing'

"I have been creating jewelry for the past few years, but the last two have been the most amazing years so far," Deslauriers-Friesen said.

"I like to create any kind of jewelry. Chokers for the stars in Los Angeles and nice necklaces for a woman like me."

Both have achieved success independently.

Deslauriers-Friesen was invited to share her jewelry at the DPA Group's pre-Emmy Award gifting suite in Los Angeles in 2014 and pre-Golden Globe gifting suite in 2015.

"It was quite amazing," she said.

'We want your jewelry'

"When the lady contacted me at home and said to me, 'Nadine, we want your jewelry at the gifting suite,' and I was like, 'But I don't create with diamonds, gold and precious stones,'" Deslauriers-Friesen said with a laugh.

"What am I going to do there? Are you serious?"

Newton's designs have gotten lots of attention at recent Western Canada Fashion Week events.

"I did the emerging designer competition in March of 2015 and I won third of nine designers. They were all designers that were formally trained, went to college and I am completely self-taught, so it was a dream come true just to get third out of all of that," Newton said.

"I went back in September of 2015 and I ended up winning first."
